News item: Press release
Since Sunday 30 June, 1,000 young Europeans from 33 different countries participating in the Youth
2002 initiative have been staying at 13 Danish folk high schools around the country, where they have
day and night discussed how Europe of the future should look.
Youth 2002 is a European youth project set up in co-operation between a number of folk high schools,
societies and international organisations for the purpose of involving European youth in the debate
on the future of the EU. The starting point for the project has been the open question: “If Europe
is to have a constitution, what should it contain?”
On Thursday 11 July 2002 at 4.00 PM, two representatives from each of the 13 folk high schools will
meet at Rønshoved Folk High School. They will each bring with them a proposal for a future European
constitution. During the night, the 26 youths are to formulate a complete draft constitution on
behalf of Youth 2002. This will be presented to Danish Minister for European Affairs Bertel Haarder
on Friday 12 July at 8.45 AM. Subsequently, in a live video-link broadcast to Brussels, the draft
constitution will be presented to the European Convention on the future of the EU and the Youth
Convention, which will be meeting together.
Minister for European Affairs Bertel Haarder will earlier on Thursday 11 July 2002 at 12.30 PM visit
Rønshoved Folk High School, where he will meet with the young people involved in Youth 2002 and
discuss the numerous questions they have explored during the last two weeks.
On the occasion of this event, Minister for European Affairs Bertel Haarder states:
“It will be exciting to see the results of the efforts made by European youth. I hope it will be
positively received and serve to inspire the debate on Europe. The future of Europe is the future of
the young. For this reason, it is therefore highly positive that 1,000 young people choose to spend
their summer holidays discussing how Europe should look in the future. We should allow it to serve
as the starting signal for a debate on how we can create a Europe based on peace, democracy and
welfare for generations to come.”
